Learning Korean has been very rewarding. I am proud of how far I've come."
Connor, Korean student
Connor Sperling is a Vancouver chef whose love of food, travel and Korean culture inspired him to learn the language. Through UBC Extended Learning's Korean courses, he has built the confidence to communicate with his wife's family and deepen his connection to Korea.
What led you to seek out Korean courses?
My wife is Korean and I wanted to be able to communicate more naturally with her family.
I also travel to Korea often and would like to build a deeper connection and understanding with the country beyond being just a tourist. While I tried learning on my own, I realized I needed a structured program with experienced instructors to build a stronger foundation.
What was a highlight for you in the Korean classes?
The biggest highlight for me was our instructor, Dongkyong. She was patient, warm and knowledgeable. Her encouragement made learning enjoyable and gave me the confidence to keep improving each week. Learning a new language can be intimidating, but DongKong made it approachable and fun.
What surprised you about the classes?
I was very surprised at how many people were also interested in learning Korean. It was exciting to be in a classroom with students who all had their own reasons for learning the language. Sharing a common goal with so many others was motivating and supportive.
How are you applying the Korean language skills you learned in your personal or professional life?
I try to use the Korean language as much as possible with my wife and whenever we visit her family. Even small conversations have become easier.
Who would you recommend UBC Extended Learning Korean classes to?
I would and have recommended UBC Extended Learning language classes to friends interested in learning a new language in a structured and supportive environment. Whether it's for travelling, work, or a learning about a culture they are interested in. The program does a great job at making beginners feel welcome.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Learning Korean has been very rewarding. I am proud of how far I've come and feel I have built a solid foundation that will help me continue to learn and progress. I am looking forward to returning for Korean Beginner 3 in the fall.
