The blue economy is nearly as vast as the oceans themselves, spanning diverse industries, global systems, innovative research and environmental initiatives. At its core is the sustainable development of ocean resources to support healthy marine ecosystems for generations to come. This globally significant work requires professionals who can understand complex, interconnected issues, make data-informed decisions, and communicate and consult effectively with stakeholders, rightsholders, policymakers and the public.
Developed by the UBC Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, our blue economy offerings integrate leading ocean data and research to provide participants with practical skills for real-world applications. These online programs can be taken individually to build expertise in a specific area or combined to develop a comprehensive understanding of this vast and diverse sector.
High school students can also explore this field through the UBC Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries mini school Dive into Marine Science, part of the UBC Future Global Leaders pre-university program.
Canada’s ocean economy accounts for $31.7 billion annually in gross domestic product and almost 300,000 jobs in fisheries and aquaculture, energy, shipping, tourism and recreation.
