The instructor was a wonderful sounding board for our project, a wealth of knowledge, and someone to look up to in the world of business. I was fortunate enough to build a wonderful relationship with her and now have her as a professor in one of my classes!
Anna, UBC Future Global Leaders student
Anna’s passion for entrepreneurship began at eight years old when she started her first business. She took Introduction to Business Foundations in the UBC Future Global Leaders online program to get a taste of studying business at the university level. The course helped Anna cultivate her interest in business and gain valuable skills she now uses in her first year at the UBC Sauder School of Business.
What motivated you to take part in UBC Future Global Leaders?
I originally heard about Future Global Leaders from a high school career counselor, and when my parents heard about it, they both agreed it was a great way to see what the UBC Sauder School of Business could be like! My own drive for curiosity fueled me to take part in each online class and engage with the material whole heartedly.
What course did you take? Why did you choose that course?
I took Introduction to Business Foundations in the hopes of getting a taste for what UBC Sauder would be like if I got in. When I was eight years old, I made my first “business” selling bookmarks for a dollar a piece to raise money for flood repairs in Nepal. From there, I started multiple other small businesses and non-profits for a myriad of natural disasters and local care projects. My most recent venture was selling jars of honey from my high school’s farm to table garden program to fund money for the school’s fine arts department.
How did your instructor impact your experience in UBC Future Global Leaders?
During the course, the instructor was a wonderful sounding board for our project, a wealth of knowledge, and someone to look up to in the world of business. I was fortunate enough to build a wonderful relationship with the instructor and now have her as a professor in one of my classes! By staying in contact after Future Global Leaders was over, I have had so many wonderful conversations and built a memorable connection that has been both inspirational and empirical to my transition into UBC Sauder.
What did you enjoy the most from your course and the program?
My favorite parts about Future Global Leaders were working with students from all around the world, meeting new people who had wildly different backgrounds than myself, building a community that was based off of a common interest instead of location or being placed in the same class, and having a taste of a first-year university business course at a business school that I was hoping and praying to get in to!
How did UBC Future Global Leaders prepare you for university and beyond?
After being at UBC Sauder for nearly a year now, I have realized that group projects and connecting with people who have a different background is essential to entering the workforce and learning soft skills.
What would you say to someone thinking about attending UBC Future Global Leaders?
Do it! It taught me so much about teamwork and gave me a first taste of a subject that fascinated me. As someone interested in attending the UBC Sauder School of Business, it was a great snapshot of what awaited me and my peers once we got in.
