Dr. Cristina Goes Schaurich, UBC Future Global Leaders Instructor

Dr. Cristina Goes Schaurich is a trained pediatric neurosurgeon and PhD candidate at UBC. She teaches the UBC Future Global Leaders course Neuroanatomy: The Human Brain, which introduces students to the structure and function of the brain using interactive learning tools like virtual reality and case-based teaching to engage students with both basic neuroanatomy and clinical applications.

What motivated you to join Future Global Leaders as an instructor?

I have always been passionate about education and mentorship, and Future Global Leaders provides a unique opportunity to engage with high school students who are eager to learn about science and healthcare. The idea of influencing students at such a formative stage in their academic careers is incredibly rewarding. Being able to show them how fascinating and impactful neuroanatomy is—and how it relates to real-life clinical scenarios—motivates me to continue teaching.

What is the most valuable aspect of Future Global Leaders, for you and the students?

For me, the most valuable aspect is the ability to connect directly with curious, motivated students and help guide their academic and career paths. Many students come to the program uncertain about their academic capabilities, and it is incredibly rewarding to see them gain clarity and confidence through the course. For the students, I believe the most valuable aspect is the exposure to a university-level academic experience, the chance to interact with professionals in the field, and the opportunity to explore a subject (like neuroanatomy) that they may never have had the chance to study before. It helps them broaden their perspectives on potential careers in medicine, neuroscience and other fields.

Why should students come and study at UBC in Vancouver?

Vancouver is a vibrant, diverse and globally-connected city, offering a wealth of opportunities for students to grow academically and personally. The city’s natural beauty, combined with its strong focus on innovation and research, makes it an ideal place for students to explore new fields. UBC, in particular, is a world-renowned institution with cutting-edge research facilities and faculty. Studying here gives students a chance to experience not just an outstanding education, but also to live in one of the most beautiful and livable cities in the world.

How have you seen students transform during their time in the program?

Over the course of the program, I’ve witnessed students grow in both knowledge and confidence. When they first arrive, many students are unsure about their academic capabilities and interests. By the end of the program, I see students who have a much clearer sense of direction, having been exposed to both the scientific material and the real-world applications of what they’ve learned. Some students who initially had no idea what medicine or science would look like as a professional career end up discovering a newfound passion for topics like neuroanatomy. The growth in their intellectual curiosity, critical thinking skills and ability to apply concepts to real-life scenarios is incredible to watch.
