From the pithy structure of the shortest anecdote up to the intricacies of the longest novel, and through our quest to find the perfect wording, creative writing is how human beings express themselves to one another. As large language models continue to flatten creativity into what a robot can dream up based on all that’s come before, the act of writing becomes an act not just of beauty, but of resistance. When we learn to write creatively, we retain what storytelling and writing have always done best: document and celebrate what it means to be human.
Developed and delivered by the world-renowned UBC School of Creative Writing in partnership with UBC Extended Learning, our courses provide a student-centred writing education that values thorough feedback, supportive community and a deep knowledge of craft.
Our instructors are working writers who publish in a multitude of genres and are in constant conversation with leading creators in the worlds of fiction, poetry, film, writing for children, and creative non-fiction. Each course is an expression of their personal experience and expertise, and invites students to discover the genre for themselves.
Whether you are a new writer just getting started or a seasoned professional honing your skills, you will come away from each course with works you are proud of, lifelong habits you can use to keep creating, and an understanding of the kinds of pieces you’ll want to write next.
Course details are coming soon, with classes launching this fall. Subscribe for updates and registration announcements.
