Leena Alkhammash, UBC Future Global Leaders instructor

Leena Alkhammash is a PhD candidate and instructor at the University of British Columbia. She teaches Virtual Anatomy: Inside the Human Body in 3D and Neuroanatomy: The Human Brain, two UBC Future Global Leaders courses that blend science and technology to help students explore the human body in immersive 3D environments.

What motivated you to join Future Global Leaders as an instructor?

I was drawn to Future Global Leaders because it offers opportunities for passionate young learners from around the world to experience UBC’s vibrant academic community. I wanted to inspire students early on in their academic journeys, to show them that learning science can be creative, exciting and relevant to their generation when explored through technology.

What is the most valuable aspect of Future Global Leaders, for you and the students?

For me as an instructor, it’s witnessing the spark of curiosity when students put on a VR headset and see anatomy come alive. For the students, it’s an inclusive, hands-on experience that builds knowledge, confidence, and sparks logical thinking about future careers. It is proving to them that anatomy can be fun and applied in their everyday life. Their thoughtful questions about science and medicine motivate me to keep exploring new ways to teach and inspire their curiosity.

Why should students come and study at UBC in Vancouver?

Vancouver has this amazing blend of nature, culture and innovation. You can surf in the summer, ski in the winter, hike through the forests as the leaves turn golden in fall, and have a picnic under the cherry blossoms in spring. UBC is a global leader in research and experiential learning, making it an inspiring place to grow both academically and personally.

How have you seen students transform during their time in the program?

Students often arrive feeling unsure about university life, but in just two weeks, their confidence and curiosity grow noticeably. Through interactive classes and after-class activities that immerse them in UBC’s campus, Vancouver lifestyle and essential academic and interpersonal skills, they start thinking like global learners; curious, motivated and inspired to make decisions in their lives. Many even stay in touch after the course, sharing updates about their academic and research achievements, which is incredibly rewarding to see.

What would you say to a student thinking about joining Future Global Leaders?

Come ready to explore, connect and have fun while learning! You’ll meet inspiring people, learn from passionate instructors and discover new ways of seeing the world and yourself. It’s more than just a summer course; it’s the beginning of an exciting journey of growth and global connections.
