Meet Zach

Headshot of Zach.

The best part of Future Global Leaders for me was being able to create lifelong friendships. Although my Future Global Leaders friend group is all over the country, we still are able to create a long-distance relationship between us all.

Student, UBC Future Global Leaders

What was the first thing you noticed about UBC Future Global Leaders when you arrived?

My first interaction with UBC Future Global Leaders was at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Before arriving, I thought I would be alone since I was one of the few flying in from Montreal. The welcome I received from not only the monitors, but also the other early students, shocked me. I realized that Future Global Leaders' importance to me was being able to build relationships with many people. Quickly we broke the ice and stirred up conversations and built a connection with other students and monitors from the very first day.

What motivated you to register for UBC Future Global Leaders, and why did you choose Intro to Engineering?

Initially I was motivated to register for UBC Future Global Leaders as it would give me a good perspective of attending school far away from home, and it would give me a good perspective of the educational environment of university. I chose Intro to Engineering because I’m hoping to get a job in the STEAM field after my university studies. I was hoping it would also open my mind to the specific and different fields in STEAM.

How does your experience in Future Global Leaders compare to high school life?

Future Global Leaders was very different from high school life. The freedom I had of what I wanted to do all day (with the exception of classes) was a shock to me. For example, typically I wouldn’t hang out with my friends as often as every day, but at Future Global Leaders that was possible. I had the time and space. While in high school, half of my day is taken up with classes.

How has the Intro to Engineering instructor impacted your experience?

My instructor helped me through exploring the different paths of Engineering and STEAM. Although we have a gap in age and experience, his engagement in our conversations loosened up my fears of professors being superior over us.

What has been the best part of UBC Future Global Leaders summer program?

The best part of Future Global Leaders for me was being able to create lifelong friendships. Although my Future Global Leaders friend group is all over the country from Vancouver, to Calgary, to Toronto and Charlottetown, we still are able to create a long-distance relationship between us all. I’m sure we will all meet sometime soon during university, if not even sooner, and if we all decide to go to UBC, we can recreate those very memories we made on campus during Future Global Leaders and many more with our time together there.
