One of my favorite parts of UBC Future Global Leaders is witnessing students grow in confidence. These small moments of transformation are powerful and show the supportive impact of the program.
Jin Peng, UBC Future Global Leaders student life wellness assistant
For Jin Peng, a Bachelor of Commerce student at the UBC Sauder School of Business, one of the most meaningful parts of being a student life wellness assistant at UBC Future Global Leaders was supporting students as they experienced university life for the first time. “I wanted to be that encouraging presence and help students feel confident, safe and excited about their university journey.”
In his role, Jin Peng checked in with students daily and made sure their well-being was supported. “The best part was being a dependable presence during moments of uncertainty. Knowing that I could reduce students’ stress and help them feel cared for was incredibly rewarding.”
The position also helped him build skills such as staying calm under pressure, communicating clearly and adapting quickly. These skills helped him support students effectively and boosted his confidence and personal growth. He also watched students become more open and confident during the program. “I saw shy students who were hesitant to join group activities slowly open up and begin sharing their unique talents and personalities. These small moments of transformation are really powerful.”
Jin Peng’s advice to students thinking about joining UBC Future Global Leaders? “This is the best way to experience what university life is truly like. You get to live on campus, connect with peers from around the world, and experience both the challenges and joys of student life in a supportive environment.”
