With Future Global Leaders, you get to spend your summer meeting people from around the world and create long-lasting bonds.
Bakhita Bwire, UBC Future Global Leaders senior student life assistant
Bakhita’s path to UBC spans continents. Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, she immigrated to Winnipeg before moving to Vancouver for university. Now a double major in psychology and international relations, she has been part of the Future Global Leaders team for two summers—first as a Student Life Assistant (SLA) and most recently as a Senior Student Life Assistant (SSLA).
Returning to the program was an easy choice. “Last summer was an incredibly fulfilling experience, so I was sure I wanted to return, especially with the option of developing professionally as a Senior Student Life Assistant this year!”
In her SSLA role, Bakhita supported students while also guiding and mentoring her team of SLAs. She ensured off-campus excursions were safe and well-organized and contributed to creating meaningful experiences through activities and community-building. The position also allowed her to grow as a leader: “I’ve strengthened my communication skills, learned to plan and adapt quickly, and developed my ability to lead and direct a team.”
One of the most rewarding parts of the role was seeing students grow closer during the program. Bakhita saw shy students come out of their shells, form strong bonds and create a warm, joyful community in just two weeks.
Considering Future Global Leaders? “With Future Global Leaders, you get to spend your summer meeting people from around the world and create long-lasting bonds. It’s an experience I’d recommend to anyone!”
