Instructor, UBC Future Global Leaders Sauder Mini Business School
Alym Amlani is an instructor for the UBC Future Global Leaders Sauder Mini Business School. At UBC, he teaches BUSI 335 – Information Systems, BUSI 414 – Data Visualization and Business Analytics, and COMM 335 – Management Information Systems.
What is the UBC Future Global Leaders Sauder Mini Business School designed to teach?
The mini business school was developed to introduce students to the various facets of business, including entrepreneurship, data visualization, financial accounting, finance, budgeting, OB/HR and strategic management. Through the program, students also developed case-analysis skills and had several opportunities to present in front of their peers.
What motivated you to join Future Global Leaders as an instructor?
I think it’s extremely important to engage students in business early in their academic careers. I’m very interested in edutainment (combining education and entertainment), so I was very excited about the opportunity to do so for this age group.
What is the most valuable aspect of the program, for you and the students?
The experiential learning provided by the program is fantastic. Students hear from many industry professionals and also have the opportunity to apply what they learn to real businesses. For example, when we covered the business model canvas (BMC), students were then taken to a café on campus called Loafe to prepare a BMC for them. This helped them reinforce how this company can remain competitive despite the presence of a lower-cost coffee restaurant (Tim Hortons) in the same building.
How have you seen students transform during their time in the program?
Students formed strong connections and relationships with each other. They also significantly improved their public speaking skills as evidenced by their presentations early in the program and their case competition presentations at the end.
