There is a growing, urgent need in British Columbia and beyond for English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners to develop higher language proficiency and digital literacy to thrive in school and career settings. This program addresses those gaps, focusing on international students, EAL learners and newcomers to Canada who need flexible, structured training.

The UBC Micro-certificate in AI-Assisted English Language Learning offers a unique combination of English skills instruction and hands-on AI literacy, adopting proven UBC pedagogy in a fully online format. Learners engage with generative AI tools as both technology and content, strengthening communication and digital skills that transfer directly to academic and workplace environments.

  • Format: 100% online and instructor supported, with virtual office hours and optional real-time sessions (recorded)
  • Duration: Four short courses of two weeks each, approximately fifteen hours per course, totalling sixty hours of online learning, to be completed within as little as eight weeks of study time
  • Cost: $400 per course $1,600 for the program
  • Prerequisites: Suggested English proficiency: IELTS 4.5 or higher, no prior AI background required
  • Next start date: early 2026
