Ethics and Considerations in AI for Language Learning

This course is part of the UBC Micro-certificate in AI-Assisted English Language Learning.

Gain the skills to use artificial intelligence (AI) ethically for language learning.

As technology advances, English language learners must navigate new questions about fairness, privacy and bias in education. This course directly addresses these issues, teaching you to recognize risks and make informed choices when using AI for language improvement. You learn to evaluate ethical considerations and protect your personal data. The course’s short two-week online, interactive format allows you to participate from anywhere while engaging in meaningful discussions and reflection.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of ethics, privacy and fairness in AI
  • Recognize and discuss bias and misinformation in AI outputs
  • Analyze real-life scenarios for ethical AI use
  • Create a personal framework for using AI responsibly

  • Real case studies

Week 2:

  • Case Studies: Ethical choices in AI use and language learning
  • Macro and micro ethics
  • Reflective discussion post and replies

How am I assessed?

You will be assessed through a case study analysis and a discussion post. A minimum grade of 70% is required to pass.

Expected effort

Expect to spend seven to eight hours per week, including optional live sessions or office hours.

Technology requirements

To take this course, and for the best experience, we recommend you have access to:

  • an email account
  • a computer or laptop using Windows or macOS or a tablet
  • the latest version of a web browser (or previous major version release)
  • a reliable internet connection
  • a video camera

One day before the start of your course, we’ll email you step-by-step instructions for accessing your course.

You will also need an AI account of your choosing (ChatGPT, CoPilot, Claude, Perplexity, etc.) You can use a free version to complete the course, but some of the functions shown in the courses require a basic paid account.

Requisites

Completion of Basics of AI and Language Learning.

Suggested IELTS 4.5 or higher.

100% online and instructor-supported. Includes flexible asynchronous study, optional weekly live session and drop-in office hours.
