Specialized Applications of AI in Language Learning

This course is part of the UBC Micro-certificate in AI-Assisted English Language Learning.

Advance your skills by exploring how specialized AI applications can support personalized language learning in real-world scenarios. Complete the program by designing a project or portfolio tailored to your goals.

This final course helps you take your skills further by applying what you have learned to practical, real-world scenarios using specialized AI applications. You will experiment with tools like conversation simulators, translation aids and writing assistants to see how they support language goals. The project-based approach lets you create a portfolio or plan for using AI in your own studies, work or daily life. The short two-week course format remains flexible, supporting independent practice with guidance along the way.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate and use advanced AI tools such as chatbots and translation aids
  • Integrate AI seamlessly into your daily learning or work routines
  • Demonstrate your growth by completing a personalized project or portfolio
  • Reflect on the future of AI in language learning

Course outline

Week 1:

How am I assessed?

You will be assessed through a project or portfolio submission. A minimum grade of 70% is required to pass.

Expected effort

Expect to spend seven to eight hours per week, including optional live sessions or office hours.

Technology requirements

To take this course, and for the best experience, we recommend you have access to:

  • an email account
  • a computer or laptop using Windows or macOS or a tablet
  • the latest version of a web browser (or previous major version release)
  • a reliable internet connection
  • a video camera

One day before the start of your course, we’ll email you step-by-step instructions for accessing your course.

You will also need an AI account of your choosing (ChatGPT, CoPilot, Claude, Perplexity, etc.) You can use a free version to complete the course, but some of the functions shown in the courses require a basic paid account.

Ethics and Considerations in AI for Language Learning.

Suggested IELTS 4.5 or higher.

100% online and instructor-supported. Includes flexible asynchronous study, optional weekly live session, and drop-in office hours.
