  1. Winnie Low

    Winnie provides learning technology, media, project management, change management and online course and program development leadership and expertise at UBC Extended Learning (ExL). Her focus is on increasing UBC’s capacity to support online teaching and learning for non-degree programming. In her role, she oversees the ExL Learning Design & Learning Technology, and ExL DIY Media communities. She also provides portfolio management expertise for Vice-Provost and Academic Office initiatives, and leads learning design and media development for new ExL and Vice-President Academic Office initiatives, such as Academic Essentials. Winnie is the ExL representative at the LT Ecosystem Working Group and Canvas Catalog Administrators Group. Certified as a Change Management Professional and in ITIL Foundation, Winnie brings more than 16 years’ experience in information technology, learning technology and online course and program development to her role.

  2. Jamie Ma

    Jamie oversees office administration and is the primary administrative contact for UBC Extended Learning (ExL). She ensures the ExL office runs smoothly and is always seeking ways to streamline administration. She provides executive-level support for the ExL Executive Director, and assists the ExL Management Team. Reporting to the ExL Director of Administration, Jamie’s day-to-day duties also include liaising with various UBC units, faculties and departments in the wider UBC community.

  3. Adam Huizinga

    Adam is responsible for anticipating and analyzing the business needs of UBC Extended Learning, as well as initiating, delivering and managing UBC Extended Learning services for internal and external clients. Working closely with the student service and program teams, Adam supports staff to ensure that they have the tools needed to create an optimal learning environment for all our students and instructors. He has a background in helping people understand technology, and is passionate about assisting historically marginalized groups harness university resources for their advancement.

  4. Brian Taguchi

    Brian leads and manages the UBC Certificate in Organizational Coaching program at UBC Extended Learning, as well as the delivery of coach training modules customized to internal clients at UBC. He hires, trains and coordinates a team of UBC Mentor Coaches, onsite facilitators and online moderators who support organizational coaching programs. In partnership with UBC Coaching Services, Brian designs and iterates program material and content to meet emerging needs in the coach training marketplace, and explores new initiatives within UBC and for industry.

  5. Cherry (Zhuoying) Yu

    In her role, Cherry supports the development, planning and delivery of the intercultural, equity, diversity, and inclusion certificates and micro-credential courses and programs. Cherry liaises with different stakeholders in the CESD community and provides support for facilitators, moderators, course participants and alumni, striving to optimize the learning experience for both individuals and organizations. Her work also includes coordinating the building and strengthening of industry partnerships and relationships within the Equitable Systems Design program.   Cherry’s background has laid a solid foundation for her work at UBC, as have her studies and government and organizational work in China, France and Switzerland. Fluent in English, Cantonese, Mandarin and French, Cherry is a lifelong learner who loves to contribute to building diverse and inclusive programs for adults.

  6. Emily Wu

    Emily manages the design, development and delivery of Extended Learning (ExL)’s professional programs. She works closely with ExL teams, UBC Faculty and external partners to create policies, systems and organizational practices that support the delivery of programs including data science, cloud computing, extended reality, Python and Indigenous health. Emily brings more than 15 years’ experience in program management and educational technology to her role. She’s committed to advancing flexible and innovative teaching and learning practices that are accessible to adult learners, and support them in their career and professional transitions. A certified professional coach, Emily is a member of Coaching at UBC, a program that offers one-on-one and group coaching services to Faculty and staff. 

  7. Joenita Paulrajan

    Joenita leads the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), Intercultural and International Development programs at UBC Extended Learning (ExL). She conducts research, designs and develops curricula and course materials, and leads a team of approximately 30 facilitators. Joenita also optimizes the integration of new online learning tools, strategies and instructional design to make the online experience accessible and interactive for adult learners. With a PhD in intercultural studies and extensive experience across international contexts, Joenita regularly presents at conferences and hosts EDI workshops, both at UBC, at other post-secondary institutions and for organizations that have included the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources, the Conference Board of Canada and Asia-Pacific Association for International Education. Her outreach activities help inform ExL programs, and ensure it stays at the forefront of current EDI practices.

  8. Karen Rolston

    Karen Rolston oversees the development and delivery of UBC Extended Learning’s (ExL) educational offerings for mid-career learners. She focuses on creating valuable, meaningful educational opportunities that support and enrich people’s careers and professional transitions. A member of the ExL Management Team, she works with ExL’s educational programmers, and liaises with community and campus partners to develop online and on-campus programs that are relevant, flexible and accessible. Karen is passionate about creating inclusive, thriving, engaged and respectful workplaces, and enjoys exploring those themes at ExL, and with staff and faculty across UBC as a certified internal organizational coach with Coaching @ UBC.

  9. Matthew Schmidt

    Matthew (Matt) is responsible for course and curriculum design and development, and evening weekend and online programming for UBC Extended Learning Languages, Professional Writing and Communications and English Communication Skills courses and programs. He also manages summer institutes in French, Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL), and supervises and mentors more than 50 instructors. Matt is fluent in Spanish and French, and represents ExL at the Centre de la Francophonie de UBC. A published fiction author, Matt’s background includes 12 years’ experience in adult education, a master’s in French literature, a bachelor’s in linguistics and basic skills in ASL.

  10. Rose Tang

    In her role at UBC Extended Learning (ExL), Rose provides a high level of customer service and administrative support to mid-career learners. With her background in business administration and tourism, she helps advise students on course and program choices and assists with registration. Rose liaises with program teams and student services team members, and supports students throughout their learning journey with ExL.
