The UBC Award of Achievement in Business English for International Professionals helps improve your English communication skills for the Canadian business environment. Learn how to communicate with the appropriate words, tone and expressions, increase your business vocabulary, refine your English pronunciation, and gain confidence in public speaking, meetings and presentations.

After completing this program, you can expect to have a good foundation in Canadian business English communications. You’ll also have the confidence to communicate and interact with colleagues and clients in the Canadian workplace.
By the end of the program, you’ll:
- know how to communicate appropriately in a business environment
- feel confident in public speaking, meetings and presentations
- understand and be able to use common Canadian business English terms and expressions
Who is This Program For?
If you’ve recently moved to Canada, or are looking for employment in Canada for the first time, you may benefit from this program. You may already be employed and are interested in enhancing your career skills or move to a new job.
We recommend you have an English level equivalent to an A2 or higher of the Council of Europe’s Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to enrol in the courses.
All courses are online, and feature live real-time classes, except for Business Writing Essentials, which is instructor supported. Learn more about online learning at Extended Learning.
Expect a highly interactive experience in your real-time classes, with group and pair work, and feedback from your instructor.
Expect to spend two to three hours per week on each course, including time spent in real-time classes, to complete your assignments and homework.
You’ll need to have access to a computer, laptop or tablet, an email account, and the internet with an up-to-date web browser. For real-time classes, you will need access to a video camera and microphone.
This part-time program consists of four required courses and two elective courses, for a total of 83 instructional hours.

How Am I Assessed?
You’re assessed based on your participation and demonstrated improvements in your spoken skills. In Business Writing Essentials and Business Writing Style, you receive written feedback from your instructor on your assignments, but no letter or numerical grades.
Our English Communication Skills instructors are qualified and experienced English as Additional Language (EAL) teachers.
Fees are paid on a course-by-course basis and range and are approximately $2,500, depending on which electives you choose. A one-time non-refundable $175 application fee is due upon acceptance into the program. Fees include all course materials, and are subject to change.

Follow These Steps to Start the Program
- Complete the online application form.
- A program advisor will contact you.
- Once you have been accepted into the program, pay the $175 application fee. You can then register for courses and have them applied toward the program requirements.
You can have up to two English Communication Skills courses applied toward your award of achievement if you’ve taken the courses in the past year.
To be awarded the UBC Award of Achievement in Business English for International Professionals, you must complete all four required courses and at least two elective courses, and attend 80% of your scheduled classes. Once you’re accepted into the program, all required courses and two elective courses must be completed within 18 months.
