Essentials of Neuroscience

Neuroscience is increasingly shaping how we understand health, learning, technology and human behaviour, yet access to neuroscience training outside traditional degree programs remains limited. As demand for neuroscience knowledge grows across sectors, there is increasing need for accessible learning that builds understanding of brain science and its relevance in everyday life.

The UBC Certificate in Essentials of Neuroscience is a part-time, online program that provides a broad introduction to core neuroscience concepts and their real-world applications. By completing two stackable micro-certificates, you develop the knowledge and confidence to connect neuroscience principles to your work, interests and future learning goals.

Developed by the UBC Undergraduate Program in Neuroscience and UBC Extended Learning, this certificate combines scientific foundations with case studies, applied examples and diverse perspectives. Together, the two micro-certificates offer a structured pathway to deepen your understanding of neuroscience and its connections to health, behaviour and society.

• Who it’s for: Professionals in healthcare, technology, education, research and other fields that could benefit from neuroscience training, as well as individuals seeking accessible, applied neuroscience learning for professional development or personal interest 
• Format: 100% online, available as self-paced study or instructor supported with real-time sessions 
• Duration: Two courses of 11 weeks each, approximately 165 hours total, with up to six months to complete each course in the self-paced format 
• Cost: $1,118 to $2,118 for the program
• Next offering: Winter 2027 

The UBC Certificate Essentials of Neuroscience is composed of two micro-certificates: Thinking Like a Neuroscientist and Neuroscience and Our World. Both are required to complete the certificate.

StrongerBC future skills grant

This program is eligible for StrongerBC future skills grant, which is open to most BC residents aged 19 years or older – and covers up to $3,500 for eligible programs at public post-secondary institutions.

Applications for this program will open in the StrongerBC future skills grant Management System in the near future.
