Effective communication is essential in the sustainable blue economy, where decisions about oceans and coasts depend on clear, trusted information. Yet many people who care deeply about ocean issues—whether they hold scientific, industry or community knowledge—struggle to translate complex ideas into messages that resonate with stakeholders, rightsholders, decision-makers and the public.
The UBC Micro-certificate in Communicating Ocean Science is a 12-week, part-time online micro-certificate that helps make your work more visible and influential. You learn to design clear, targeted messages and choose written, oral and multimedia formats that educate, inform, engage and persuade the audiences you most want to reach.
Developed in partnership with UBC’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, with support from sector partners, the program blends practical communication training with real-world blue economy scenarios. Through hands-on projects and feedback, you create a communication piece on an ocean-related topic aligned with your goals, helping you build confidence and prepare for future roles or community leadership in the sustainable blue economy.
