Develop practical Korean literacy skills that will help you read more complex authentic texts, write with greater accuracy and cohesion, and engage more confidently in both formal and informal written Korean.
Through authentic readings and writing tasks, you strengthen your ability to understand increasingly complex sentence structures and develop your understanding of more formal written Korean, including honorific forms and markers.
This course is designed for students who have already completed Korean Beginner 3 or Reading and Writing Korean Beginner 2, or equivalent, and who can handle routine communication in familiar contexts.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- read real-life texts of moderate complexity in Korean
- produce simple written passages about everyday topics such as interviews, transportation, personal experiences and preferences
- write more clearly and cohesively in both formal and informal contexts using honorific markers, particles, demonstratives, numbers, counters and adjectival structures
- connect clauses using connective endings and conjunctions to form more complex sentences
Course outline
This course consists of nine weekly units. Each unit uses an authentic text as the source of its grammar and vocabulary content. A variety of activities help you practice your writing skills.

Expected effort
You can expect to spend approximately three to four hours per week to complete the activities.
Requisites
Korean Beginner 2 or equivalent is required.
Course format
This course is 100% online and instructor supported. Coursework is done independently and at your own pace within deadlines set by your instructor. Log in anytime to your course to access the lessons as they become available.
Materials will be available in Canvas for three weeks after the course ends, after which time you will no longer be able to access the course.
How am I assessed?
You receive individualized feedback from your instructor and are assessed on small weekly writing assignments related to each module’s topics and themes. You also complete short interactive quizzes or homework on the grammar and vocabulary topics presented each week.
Record of completion
Students who have successfully completed a course can access completion documents two weeks after the course ends. Course completion means 80% attendance and/or 80% completion of mandatory assignments.
Technology requirements
You’ll need access to a laptop or desktop computer or tablet, an email account, and internet access and an up-to-date web browser. For real-time classes, you’ll also need access to a video camera and microphone.
