Develop foundational Korean literacy skills that will help you read authentic texts, express yourself in writing and engage more confidently with the Korean language.
This course focuses on Hangeul in everyday writing and uses authentic materials and writing tasks to help you strengthen your Korean literacy while deepening your understanding of Korean orthography and pronunciation. You will also explore how Korean pronunciation rules relate to Hangeul spelling.
Build confidence reading day-to-day materials in Korean, including agendas, recipes and instructions. You will also develop your ability to construct clear, functional sentences and write Hangeul by hand, on your phone or on your computer.
This course is designed for students who have already completed Korean Beginner 1 and 2, or equivalent, and who wish to strengthen their Korean literacy.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- read simple real-life texts in Korean
- produce short written passages about everyday topics such as weather, daily routines, locations and holiday plans
- use essential grammar including key particles, basic verb endings, tenses, demonstratives, numbers and question forms to construct clear, functional sentences in writing
Course outline
This course consists of nine weekly units. Each unit uses an authentic text as the source of its grammar and vocabulary content. A variety of activities help you practice your writing skills.

Expected effort
You can expect to spend approximately three to four hours per week to complete the activities.
Requisites
Korean Beginner 1 and Korean Beginner 2 or equivalent is required.
Course format
This course is 100% online and instructor supported. Coursework is done independently and at your own pace within deadlines set by your instructor. Log in anytime to your course to access the lessons as they become available.
Materials will be available in Canvas for three weeks after the course ends, after which time you will no longer be able to access the course.
How am I assessed?
You receive individualized feedback from your instructor and are assessed on small weekly writing assignments related to each module’s topics and themes. You also complete short interactive quizzes or homework on the grammar and vocabulary topics presented each week.
Record of completion
Students who have successfully completed a course can access completion documents two weeks after the course ends. Course completion means 80% attendance and/or 80% completion of mandatory assignments.
Technology requirements
You’ll need access to a laptop or desktop computer or tablet, an email account, and internet access and an up-to-date web browser. For real-time classes, you’ll also need access to a video camera and microphone.
