In thinking about the fact that the universe exists and that things that exist have causes, Plato was led to formulate for the first time in historical record an argument for the existence of a First Cause of the Universe, which he called "the Maker of all things". This argument has gone on to become one of the most discussed chains of thought in Western philosophy, and has attracted the attention of major philosophers such as Descartes, Leibniz, Hume, and Kant. In this course we survey some key milestones in over 2000 years of thinking about this topic.
