In thinking about human suffering and evil, the Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BC) formulated an influential argument that has been regarded variously as an argument against the existence of God, or against the goodness of God, or against the providence of God. The argument has been discussed intensely and extensively in ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy alike. It had a profound impact on theists like Leibniz, and agnostics like David Hume. In this course we survey some key milestones in over 2000 years of philosophical thinking about this topic.
