This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders online program for high school students ages 15–18.
Learn about the profession of engineering, and the disciplines of chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental and mechanical engineering. Prepare for success by practising and developing key skills in technical problem solving and engineering design, ethical decision-making, teamwork and communicating to diverse audiences.
This course is ideal if you’re interested in engineering, architecture or applied science.
Course format
This course is 100% online and instructor-supported with real-time classes, and virtual drop-in office hours during the course.
Students are expected to attend live virtual classes two hours a day from Monday to Friday for three weeks. Lectures are not recorded.
All class times are in the Pacific Time Zone (Vancouver, BC, Canada).
Expected effort
In addition to the live virtual classes and office hours, you can expect to spend one to two hours per week reading, researching and participating in discussion boards.
Instructors
Future Global Leaders courses are developed and taught by UBC professors and affiliated instructors at a first-year university level.
Dr. Ehsan Banayan Esfahani, PhD, was a lecturer and postdoctoral research fellow at UBC. He has taught introductory courses on chemical, biological, and environmental engineering and was a university mentor for the Kirkness Education Foundation. He is now a research scientist working on advanced technologies for water and wastewater treatment. Ehsan teaches Session 1 online.
Dr. Ataollah (Ata) Kheyrandish, PhD, is an adjunct professor at UBC and an environmental professional whose pioneering work in applying LEDs for water disinfection brought innovative solutions in water treatment. Ata is committed to environmental education and environmental sustainability. Ata teaches Session 2 online.
Who is eligible
This course is for high school students ages 15-18 who have completed grade 10 or equivalent.
We also recommend students have:
- 78% average / 3.5 GPA / B average / IB 5 or higher
- IELTS of 6.0 / TOEFL 80 or higher (or equivalent) for students whose high school courses were taught in a language other than English.
