French: Communicating Effectively at Work

This course is designed for students with an intermediate to advanced level of French who want to strengthen their communication skills in professional settings. You will improve your ability to interact in a variety of workplace situations, develop confidence in formal and informal exchanges, and expand your professional vocabulary and grammatical accuracy.

Through written and oral practice, you will learn to communicate effectively in professional contexts such as meetings, presentations, emails and workplace interactions, while refining your listening, reading and speaking skills.

You will also deepen your understanding of language registers and communication strategies for different workplace situations.

Writing professionally and at work (instructor-led, self-paced modules)

  • Week 1: Introducing yourself professionally in writing
  • Week 3: Writing professional emails
  • Week 5: Describing a problem and proposing a solution
  • Week 7: Mastering tone, register and professionalism in writing
  • Week 9: Final project (written or oral

Speaking and communicating professionally and at work, including pronunciation (live online sessions)

  • Week 2: Introducing yourself professionally
  • Week 4: Participating in professional or workplace meetings
  • Week 6: Giving presentations in professional settings
  • Week 8: Handling conflict and other sensitive situations

How am I assessed?

This is a non-credit course without letter or numerical grades. You receive ongoing feedback from your instructor on your written and oral communication skills throughout the course. Activities may include practical assignments, discussion forums and professional communication tasks.

Record of completion

Students who have successfully completed a course can access completion documents two weeks after the course ends. Course completion means 80% attendance and/or 80% completion of mandatory assignments.

Expected effort

You can expect to spend three to four hours per week participating in course activities and completing independent coursework.

Textbook

This course does not require the purchase of a textbook. Course materials are provided by the instructor.

Technology requirements

You’ll need a computer or tablet with a video camera and microphone, access to the internet, an email account and an up-to-date web browser. The day before your course starts, you will receive instructions on how to access the course.

Course format

This course is offered 100% online over nine weeks. Instruction alternates between instructor-led and self-paced professional writing modules (weeks one, three, five, seven and nine) and real-time online sessions focused on oral communication strategies for the workplace (weeks two, four, six and eight).

Materials will be available in Canvas for three weeks after the course ends, after which time you will no longer be able to access the course.
