Engineering the River Mini School

This mini school is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders on-campus program for high school students ages 15–18. It is offered by the UBC Department of Geography.

Drawing on concepts from physics, hydrology, ecology, geography and social science, this mini school highlights the interconnected nature of river management.

Rivers have been the cradle of civilization since ancient Mesopotamia. Today, they are actively being harmed by human disturbances such as land use change, damming, pollution and climate change. For these reasons it is essential that river management practices are improved and effort is made to conserve, study and restore rivers and their function within our ecosystems.

Engineering the River introduces you to the study of rivers, their patterns of flow, the sediment transported through them, the morphologies they build, the species that inhabit them, and solutions to controlling them.

In this hands-on course, we:

  • Discuss real-world case studies and scientific findings
  • Visit field sites to participate in fieldwork
  • Design and conduct experiments to simulate rivers in a state-of-the-art fluvial geomorphology laboratory

Students also develop their analytical thinking and scientific communication skills, and gain hands-on experience running experiments to solve real world problems.

This mini school is an excellent choice for students interested in geography, engineering, environmental science, nature, and anyone interested in or concerned about climate change.

Course format

This mini-school is held on the UBC Vancouver campus.

On the first Monday of the session, you attend Orientation Day from 9am–3pm, which helps you build friendships, connect with your learning community, feel comfortable on campus and prepare for university life.

Starting on the first Tuesday of the session, you attend your mini school classes from 9am–12pm and 1:30–3pm on weekdays.

On-campus student life activities are scheduled for all students from 3-5pm on weekdays.

Instructors

Landen Matechuk is a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia. Specializing in environmental modelling, statistical analysis and geographic information systems (GIS), Landen brings a combination of academic expertise and industry experience to support clients and community partners in the protection, conservation and restoration of natural spaces.

Sol Leader-Cole is a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia. Combining a background in geographical sciences and an interest in rivers, Sol works to understand the conditions under which mountain rivers mobilise sediment and how they can be managed to protect infrastructure and communities.
