Applications of Quantum Technology

This is the second of two courses in the UBC Micro-certificate in Step into Quantum. You must complete Foundations of Quantum Technologies before taking this course.

As investment and innovation in quantum technologies continue to grow, organizations across sectors are exploring how quantum developments may influence their future work. This course examines the quantum landscape, helping you understand the organizations, applications and emerging opportunities shaping the field in BC, across Canada and internationally.

Designed for learners who want to connect quantum technologies to their industry, career interests or future learning goals, this course focuses on practical exploration rather than technical specialization.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Compare types of quantum systems, including their functions and commercial applications
  • Understand BC’s quantum companies, including business type, stage and research focus
  • Conduct in-depth research on quantum organizations by analyzing their focus, roles and relevance to the sector
  • Differentiate how organizations are using quantum technologies to drive innovation and generate revenue
  • Identify alignment between quantum technologies and your own industry or area of work
  • Explore your personal connection to quantum through commercial application or further education pathways

Course activities include readings, videos, quizzes and discussion boards. You will also complete a Quantum Readiness Plan that connects course concepts to your professional context and future learning or career goals. In this applied project, you will reflect on your current skills, explore potential pathways for engaging with quantum technologies and identify next steps for further development in the field.
