The UBC Micro-certificate in Cybersecurity Strategy and Risk Management equips you with the skills to establish, roll out and manage robust cybersecurity policies for your organization. Learn how to develop and implement plans to identify, evaluate and respond to cybersecurity risks.
By the end of this program, you’ll be able to:
- assess your organizational understanding of cybersecurity concepts, and assemble policies by applying a layered defence-in-depth approach
- integrate good cybersecurity practices into your organization, and create a cybersecurity policy document
- evaluate the current cybersecurity risks associated with your infrastructure and software while diagnosing organizational readiness for popular threat vectors and remediations
- critically assess and explain the value of implementing cybersecurity controls to manage and minimize cybersecurity risks.
Throughout the program, you also acquire the skills to communicate and advocate for your strategies and plans, with an emphasis on using inclusive, non-racialized language. You also have the opportunity to create a supportive network of peers for knowledge exchange and information sharing through an online discussion forum.

A technical skillset is not required for this program, however, technical concepts are discussed and linked back to organization goals and operations. Take advantage of optional pre-readings to become familiar with technical concepts covered in the courses. Each course also offers optional technical deep dives for learners with an information technology background. Familiarity with management information systems, business applications, the internet of things or general technology topics is an asset.
This part-time 100% online program is instructor-supported, and combines weekly live online sessions with self-paced independent study.
Each week, review readings, case studies, whitepapers and videos provided by your instructor at your own pace. Weekly live online sessions, led by your instructor, are held on Wednesdays from 6pm to 8pm Pacific Time. Outside of class, you can contribute to a discussion board and connect with other participants.
Expect to spend approximately 5-7 hours a week to complete all learning activities, including weekly live sessions, for a total of 55 hours of learning.

Cybersecurity Standards and Strategy provides a foundational understanding of cybersecurity concepts, standards and policies with a focus on taking a layered cybersecurity approach. Discover the key business and technical considerations to create, roll out and manage a cybersecurity policy document for your organization.
Cybersecurity Risk Management explores popular cybersecurity attack vectors, and how different defence mechanisms can be used to secure your infrastructure, while reducing the risk and impact of a cybersecurity threat. This course focuses on critical controls and procedures for monitoring and minimizing cybersecurity risks. Come away with the key business processes to create, execute and manage a cybersecurity risk management plan for your business or organization. Become your organization’s cybersecurity champion, and implement plans to ensure organization-wide governance and compliance.
Take Cybersecurity Standards and Strategy and Cybersecurity Risk Management on their own, and in any order. However, to gain the most value from the program, we recommend taking both courses as they complement one another.

How am I Assessed?
You’re assessed on successfully completing weekly activities and developing a baseline cybersecurity program, including a cybersecurity standard policy document and a risk management plan. These are assessed using a rubric based on competencies.
While you’re not assessed on your attendance of the live sessions, we encourage you to attend these classes so you don’t miss the opportunity to learn and interact and with your instructor and other participants. All sessions are recorded in case you miss one.
