Students in residence
What to pack
We’ve created this handy checklist of what to pack. You can bring a small amount of spending money (Canadian dollars) but don’t bring large amounts of cash (there are no safety boxes in your residence room). Most major Canadian banks can be found on campus, but might not accept all foreign currencies.
If you own a laptop or tablet, we recommend that you bring it with you for homework and project assignments. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the UBC campus. Please read your course description to determine if any other electronics are required.
Arrival and Departure
Residence students should check in at the reception area of UBC Place Vanier, 1935 Lower Mall, UBC Point Grey Campus on the Sunday before your session begins. Students can check into their dorm rooms starting around 3:00pm local time on arrival day Sunday. Fraser River Parkade on Lower Mall/Memorial is the closest parkade.
Residence students should depart between by 11:00am local time on the last Saturday of your session. (If you are participating in more than one session, fees cover accommodation and meals in the campus residence in-between sessions.)
Students are not allowed to check-out and leave Place Vanier on their own. An adult must pick them up from Place Vanier unless they are using the Airport Shuttle Service. No student can exit the program unaccompanied.
If you arrive earlier or depart later than these dates, you will need to arrange your own accommodation for the duration outside of the program dates.
Accommodations and Meals
You will be living in Place Vanier in a single furnished bedroom with shared (single gender) washrooms and co-ed lounges. Upon arrival, you’ll be provided with a pillow, quilt and bedsheets. Remember to bring your own bathroom towel and beach towel.
You will have access to laundry facilities, which are included in the fees. Student monitors will assist you in operating washing machines and dryers.
You will eat all your meals at the Place Vanier cafeteria, with the exception of students attending classes at the Centre for Digital Media who will eat lunch at the Centre for Digital Media from Monday through Friday.
You can also buy small snacks and drinks with your own money for your residence room. You’ll have access to a microwave in your residence floor lounge, but please be aware there are no utensils, fridge or microwave in your room. There are more than 40 places to eat on campus, including grocery stores, food courts, cafes, convenience stores and restaurants that offer food from around the world.
Visits from Family and Friends
If you are planning to visit family or friends off campus, you will need to complete and submit a visitor form /off-campus sign-out form at least 48 hours before the requested visit date. Please note that all visits must take place after class time, and all requests must be submitted to our program assistants for approval. The visitors picking up the student must be of at least 18 years of age. We also require the visitor to show government-issued picture ID to a staff member prior to taking the student off campus, and the ID must match the name given on the form. Students do not have permission to leave campus unaccompanied.

Medical insurance
Local medical insurance (iMed) is provided for all international students and Canadian students travelling from overseas, whether they are staying in residence or commuting to campus.
- For international students and Canadian students travelling from overseas, and who are living in residence, coverage begins on Sunday upon the student’s arrival in Vancouver, and ends on Saturday when they leave Vancouver.
- For international students and Canadian students travelling from overseas, and who are commuting to the program, coverage begins on the first Monday and ends on the last Friday of the program.
iMed cards are held by UBC Future Global Leaders staff so that they have immediate access should the need arise.
All Canadian students and landed immigrants should carry their provincial health card.
Minor children travelling to Canada
Children under the age of 18 are considered minors in Canada. We recommend you seek advice from your travel agent and go to Visit Canada to find out what documents are required for your child to travel to Canada. We also recommend you check with the airline your child is travelling with for any additional requirements they might have in place.
If required, the Director of the Future Global Leaders program can act as the custodian for your child during their time in the program. To appoint the Director as your child’s custodian, you or your travel advisor will need to contact us and complete a notarized Custodianship Declaration form. A fee of CDN $75 will apply.
Can parents participate in program activities?
We do not permit parents to participate in our program or attend any of the program activities with their child as this goes against our philosophy. It is unfair to other students and disrupts the flow of the program.
Are you travelling to Vancouver?
If you are travelling to Vancouver, and wish to stay at UBC, we recommend Stay at UBC for helpful information about staying on campus. Parents will not be located in the same residence as their child.
Alternatively, Vancouver offers many other accommodation options and more information can be found at Destination Vancouver. Downtown Vancouver is a 30-minute car ride from the UBC campus. Excellent public transit options to and from campus are also available.
UBC campus tours
Campus tours are offered for students and family members at various times during the week. Schedules and registration are available online. The Welcome Centre in Brock Hall where campus tours start is open for drop-in admissions advising (for both domestic and international students) from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday.
