Healthcare generates an enormous volume of written information, from clinical notes and patient records to research papers and medical texts. Advances in AI, particularly in natural language processing (NLP), offer powerful new ways to analyze and interpret this text-based data to improve patient care, and enhance decision-making and innovation in the healthcare sector.
The UBC Micro-certificate in Natural Language Processing to Improve Patient Care is a part-time online program designed to equip healthcare providers, researchers and administrators with the expertise needed to leverage NLP tools effectively. Developed by the UBC Department of Medicine and the UBC Data Science Institute, in partnership with BC’s regional health authorities, the program curriculum delivers AI-driven data skills relevant to the evolving needs of the healthcare sector.
Build a solid foundation in NLP and large language models (LLMs), enhanced by hands-on experience with core techniques such as text pre-processing, topic modelling and sentiment and mood analysis. Learn how to critically assess NLP outputs and extract meaningful insights that enhance the quality and efficiency of patient care and strengthen evidenced-based decision-making in healthcare.
