UBC Micro-certificate

Build the knowledge and momentum to kickstart climate action where you work.
The world is not on track to keep global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius as called for in the Paris Agreement—and while there has been progress, much more is needed to achieve long term goals. Local governments, nonprofits, and businesses have a critical role to play in meeting climate targets. The UBC Micro-certificate in Climate Action Planning Foundations is designed to equip professionals with the tools, confidence, and foundational skills to begin climate action planning within their organizations and communities.
This part-time, online program is developed by experts from UBC’s Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, Sustainability Hub, and Campus and Community Planning. It supports participants in identifying where to begin, how to engage key colleagues, and what steps to take to prepare a strong foundation for a climate action plan. Through applied learning and reflective practice, learners explore topics including the science and justice dimensions of climate action, assessing organizational impacts, engaging stakeholders, gathering key data, developing terms of reference, and kickstarting their climate action planning.
Whether you currently work in—or aspire to work in—a municipality, nonprofit, or business, this certificate equips you with the foundational knowledge and internal capacity to lead meaningful climate action.
