Much of what non-Deaf people understand of the Deaf community originates from hearing-centric perspectives. Introduction to Deafhood is an opportunity to learn about Deaf people’s experiences and culture, and to connect with a new perspective. In this course, learn about Deaf Gain versus hearing loss and develop the core knowledge and skills you need to be an ally and to interact sensitively with members of the Deaf community.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Define key concepts that relate to Deafhood Recognize and understand how history has impacted Deaf people today
  • Understand the barriers and impacts that Deaf people experience
  • Compare hearing (non-Deaf) experiences with Deafhood in different areas such as technology, culture, communication, discourse and Deaf Literature
  • Describe the intersectionality of Deaf people
  • Describe the technology Deaf people use to assist them in their lives
