This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders on-campus program for high school students ages 15–18.
This comprehensive yet entertaining introduction to the art of cinematography delves into the fundamentals of camera functionality, explores the essence of cinematography, and unravels the intricacies of visual storytelling. By the end of the course, you walk away with a new found appreciation for the art of cinematography, practical knowledge of essential cinematographic techniques, and the skills to create stunning visual content using just your smartphone.
This course is for anyone interested in filmmaking, photography, or video production, including students considering film school or a program in digital media. It also appeals to students who want to improve their technical skills in using a smartphone camera and editing software to create engaging visual content.
Note: students must bring their own smartphone with video camera
This course is offered in collaboration with the Centre for Entertainment Arts.

To register, add the available session to your cart. In your cart, select the applicable enrolment option. You can pay a CAD$500 now or pay in full. Select “Pay Deposit” if you wish to pay a CAD$500 deposit now and the balance later. Select “Pay Full Amount” if you wish to pay in full now.
Complete your registration by creating a new account or logging in. If you are a parent, guardian or other adult registering for the first time on behalf of your student, please create the account in the name of the high school student attending UBC Future Global Leaders, not in your name.
Course format
This course is held on the UBC Vancouver campus. You attend class in-person 9am–12pm, Monday through Friday. After lunch, you attend university preparation workshops and participate in group activities on campus from 1:30–3pm. You can also join the Virtual Student Lounge, hosted by our UBC Student Ambassadors. Meet other Future Global Leaders from across Canada and around the world.
