This mini school is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders on-campus program for high school students ages 15–18. With 45 hours of class time, mini schools provide a comprehensive introduction to a program area and include information on learning pathways and career opportunities.
Develop your critical writing and textual analysis skills as you deconstruct and analyze video games and learn to write a wide variety of texts: descriptive, narrative, expository, instructional and persuasive.
By the end of two weeks, you will be able to:
- Analyze and understand the fundamentals of video game narrative design
- Develop compelling characters and worlds
- Write dialogue and interactive story elements
Game creation is a collaborative, creative process that rewards flexibility and the ability to collaborate as part of a team, sharing ideas, writing and providing peer feedback. And writing for video games is more than writing a voiced conversation or a fetch quest. It is the through-line for design, art, programming and a myriad of other disciplines in which an entirely custom-made world is communicated.
Experience in computer programming or the digital arts is not required, nor is a familiarity with playing or creating video games. Personal laptop is required.
CHRISTAL ROSE HAZELTON, MFA, is a Filipina American writer and video game developer. Her past experience in game development includes AAA and mobile video games, with titles such as Apex Legends, Hogwarts Legacy and LEGO Brawls.
The UBC School of Creative Writing is one of the oldest and most established academic Creative Writing programs in the world.
