This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders online program for high school students ages 15–18.
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. It explores the intricacies of the human mind, and seeks to understand how people think, act and feel. Psychology has many sub-disciplines, including behavioural, clinical, cognitive, developmental, health, sports, organizational, social and personality psychology. Not only is it one of the fastest-growing professions, it’s also among the most popular undergraduate majors at UBC and other universities.
This course is an ideal choice if you’re thinking about majoring in psychology or planning to take a psychology course at university. It’s also an excellent choice for students interested in the social sciences, applied sciences or medicine.
Chantelle M. Cocquyt is a PhD student in the Department of Psychology at UBC. She researches how people form memories of emotional experiences and why certain aspects of these experiences are better remembered than others. She uses neuroimaging techniques, specifically functional magnetic resonance imaging, to pinpoint the brain regions are involved in these processes. In addition to research, Chantelle plays an active role in sharing her knowledge across a variety of departments as an organizer and core-lecturer for the annual UBC BrainCamp, a workshop designed to teach graduate students and research assistants how to conduct functional neuroimaging analyses. Chantelle has also been active within the psychology department, assuming roles a Teaching Assistant Mentor and a member of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity Working Groups.
SUMEET M. JASWAL is a PhD candidate in the Department of Psychology at UBC. She researches human visual attention, focusing on how people negatively respond to another person’s small, repetitive movements, a phenomenon known as misokinesia. Sumeet is communications coordinator for Brain Buzz, a podcast that makes research fun, accessible and engaging for everyone. She's also a past graduate student volunteer for Let’s Talk Science at UBC, a charity that strives to improve the understanding and appreciation of physical and life sciences, mathematics, engineering and technology.

If you are a parent, guardian or other adult registering for the first time on behalf of your student, please create the account in the name of the high school student attending UBC Future Global Leaders, not in your name.
Expected effort
In addition to the live virtual classes and office hours, you can expect to spend 1-2 hours per week reading, researching and participating in discussion boards.
Technology requirements
To take this course, you’ll need access to:

- a computer, laptop or tablet under five years old using Windows or macOS
- the latest version of a web browser (or previous major version release)
- a reliable internet connection
- a video camera and microphone.

Course format
This course is 100% online and instructor-supported with real-time classes, and virtual drop-in office hours during the course.
Fall/Winter term (September – December / January – April)
Attend live virtual classes once a week on Saturdays for two hours for 10 weeks.
Summer term (July and August)
Attend live virtual classes two hours a day from Monday to Friday for three weeks.
All class times are in the Pacific Time Zone (Vancouver, BC, Canada).
