This course is perfect for students with a basic knowledge of Hiragana and Katakana (Japanese Beginner 1 or equivalent) who want to gain mastery of 100 essential Kanji characters as the next step in their Japanese reading and writing journey.
Through structured weekly lessons, interactive exercises and supported practical applications, students learn to write, read and use Kanji in a variety of everyday contexts. Understand the importance of stroke order and writing styles, while enhancing your reading comprehension to build confidence using Kanji in a range of sentences and short passages.
Course outline
At this level, you have already gained some experience with the Japanese language through a beginner course. You are able to communicate in simple and routine tasks that require a straightforward exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
Course structure
This course consists of nine weekly units. Each unit uses a different theme to introduce 10-12 Kanji characters. Weekly exercises focus on short reading passages and a range of controlled practice activities, like fill in the blanks, translations, matching games, listening activities and more. The last week includes a short final project written in Kanji.

Expected effort
You can expect to spend approximately three to four hours per week to complete the activities.

Course format
This course is 100% online and instructor supported. Coursework is done independently and at your own pace within deadlines set by your instructor. Log in anytime to your course to access the lessons as they become available.
Materials will be available in Canvas for three weeks after the course ends, after which time you will no longer be able to access the course.
How am I assessed?
You receive individualized feedback from your instructor and are assessed on small weekly writing assignments related to each module’s topics and themes. You also complete short interactive quizzes or homework on the grammar and vocabulary topics presented each week.
Record of completion
A record of completion will be emailed to students who participate and satisfy the course requirements within two weeks of the course end date. Course completion means 80% attendance and/or 80% completion of mandatory assignments.
Technology requirements
You’ll need access to a laptop or desktop computer or tablet, an email account, and internet access and an up-to-date web browser. For real-time classes, you’ll also need access to a video camera and microphone.
