Cultural tourism depends on the respectful inclusion and recognition of cultural resources to benefit visitor experiences, the destination as a whole, and the residents who live there. Without the people who are the makers, managers, and presenters of cultural experiences, the destination is unable to offer and sustain authentic cultural tourism experiences. When applied locally or regionally cultural tourism can serve as a vehicle for community development. By addressing techniques in stakeholder identification and engagement, this workshop explores a variety of approaches to engage a broader constituent base and forge new partnerships among the various groups to engage in cultural tourism development and support broader community development objectives. With intercultural visitation on the rise, you also explore respectful cross-cultural interactions among tourists and residents.
By the end of this workshop, you will:
- Identify various destination stakeholders to involve in cultural tourism and determine how best to communicate and collaborate with them during the planning process;
- Recognize the different roles and responsibilities of cultural tourism ‘guests’ and ‘hosts’;
- Be able to describe the unique issues surrounding cultural tourism and Indigenous peoples;
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of destination hosts to ensure the visitor has the desired cultural experience.
This workshop is designed to fill the gap between a typical short webinar and a longer online course. Each workshop is led by an international expert, combines lectures and small group discussion, and meets online for two (2) hours, once a week for three weeks. There is also an online discussion board for sharing information and group discussion during the three weeks. There is no grading.
