Television Writing Basics

Writing for television is a long road. To get on it, you must first master the basics: screenplay format and foundational storytelling principles.

The great filmmaker Stanley Kubrick said "the best thing that young filmmakers should do is to get hold of a camera and some film and make a movie of any kind at all." Although the focus of this course is on writing, the idea is the same: we learn by doing. There is no better education than writing screenplays, producing them, and then finally watching the finished product. This is now within the realm of possibility for virtually anyone, which is why this Television Writing Basics course will focus on creating short films and web series.

Upon completion of the course, you will have a finished a short film or webisode script and will leave with: a) evidence of your new technical and artistic abilities; and b) a production-ready script. Although seeing you through the production of these scripts is beyond the purview of this course, you will leave prepared to complete your own project.
