Social Media and Digital Authorship

This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders On-Campus program for high school students ages 15–18.

Anyone can be an author, publisher and creator today: we post messages, pictures and videos to Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook, we create vlogs and videos for TikTok and YouTube, we post to Reddit and Pinterest, we tweet, we document our lives through webcomics, and we like and comment.

Sharpen your critical thinking skills by researching different kinds of digital authorship, and exploring the digital sphere’s creative, professional and personal potential. Practise digital writing by developing content for various social media platforms.

This course is ideal if you’re interested in social media, journalism, creative writing, or marketing and communications.

Dr. ELIZABETH (Biz) NIJDAM, PhD, is a lecturer in the UBC Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies. She is also a SSHRC postdoctoral fellow at the University of Waterloo, and is working on her book manuscript Graphic Historiography: East German Memory Discourses in Comics and Graphic Novels. Biz sits on the Executive Committee of the International Comic Arts Forum and the Executive Board of the Comics Studies Society.
