Japanese Conversation and Culture Intensive

In this daytime intensive, focus on building confidence in spoken Japanese for travel, dining and everyday life while you enrich your understanding of Japanese culture.

Practice hiragana, explore calligraphy, learn to make a popular Japanese meal and participate in a group lunch in a Japanese restaurant where you order and interact directly in Japanese.

This conversation and culture intensive deepens your Japanese language practice and prepares you to speak, read and listen with greater confidence. It is designed for students who have completed Japanese Beginner 1 or Beginner 2, or who are at the equivalent level.

The cost of all activities is included in the course registration fee.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Deepen your understanding of hiragana
  • Improve your knowledge and use of Japanese pronunciation
  • Develop an appreciation and awareness of important aspects of Japanese culture
  • Feel more confident speaking and responding in Japanese in a variety of contexts
  • Know how to plan and communicate travel arrangements in Japanese
  • Prepare a traditional Japanese meal
  • Feel confident ordering food in a Japanese restaurant

 

Expected effort

You can expect to spend about four hours a day attending in-person classes. A small amount of homework may be assigned each day.

Textbook

This course does not require the purchase of a textbook. Course materials are provided by the instructor.

Course format

This course is offered in-person during the day at UBC Robson Square.

Outside of class time, access course materials online at your own pace for up to three weeks after the course ends.

Please note you can log in to your course for up to three weeks after the course ends. You will not be able to access course materials after this time.

How am I assessed?

This is a non-credit course without letter or numerical grades. You receive verbal feedback on your conversation and grammar skills from your instructor during class. Written homework is typically corrected in class. Some lesson modules may include quizzes.

Record of completion

Students who have successfully completed a course can access completion documents two weeks after the course ends. Course completion means 80% attendance and/or 80% completion of mandatory assignments.

Technology requirements

You’ll need a computer or tablet with access to the internet, an email account and an up-to-date web browser. The day before your course starts, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access the online platform with additional course information.
