Fiction and Film

Many novels have been made into great films – but what is lost, and what is gained? Compare three works with three films, and explore how a novel is brought to life on the screen. The three texts and films reviewed are James Joyce’s The Dead, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon and Mordecai Richler’s Barney’s Version.

IRA NADEL, PhD, professor of English at The University of British Columbia, is the author of biographies of Leonard Cohen, Tom Stoppard, and David Mamet, and is currently researching a critical biography of Virginia Woolf.
