This course is part of the UBC Future Global Leaders Online program for high school students ages 15–18.
One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. One in four people will die of cancer. Discuss the biological mechanisms that underlie cancer development. Understand how a cell gains an ability to proliferate uncontrollably, invade nearby tissues and spread throughout the body. Learn about cancer therapies, the history of the disease and why so many countries are racing to end cancer once and for all. This course is ideal if you’re interested in biological sciences or medical sciences.
SOFYA LANGMAN is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC and a graduate research assistant at the BC Cancer Research Centre. Her research focuses on childhood brain tumours, and cancer adaptations to micro-environmental stresses.
During the course, from Monday to Friday, you’re online for two hours a day attending a live, virtual class. You can log on from wherever you are. Class times are in the Pacific Time Zone (Vancouver, BC, Canada) and vary by session.
In addition to the live virtual classes, you can expect to spend 4–5 hours per week reading, researching and participating in discussion boards.
All UBC Future Global Leaders students have access to the online Virtual Student Lounge where they can hang out and develop friendships with students from across Canada and around the world.
We use Canvas, an intuitive and easy-to-use web-based learning application. You will receive instructions to access this application two business days before your first class.
