Paolo Bernasconi works as Human Resources specialist with the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) at their headquarters in New York. He joined UNFPA from UNV in Bonn, where he worked as Volunteer Management Specialist in Research and Development to contribute to strengthening the capacity of UNV staff and volunteers in delivering highly effective volunteer-based programmes. A delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Paolo worked in the Caucasus, Central Asia and Africa in humanitarian aid assignments. In between his UN and ICRC experiences, he worked in the Swiss-based Centre for Information, Counselling and Training for Professions Relating to International Cooperation to support the recruitment of Swiss professionals for selected UN agencies and in delivering pre-departure and re-entry trainings. He obtained an undergraduate degree in law from the University of Bern and a graduate degree in political science from the University Komenius in Bratislava. During his studies, he volunteered in a variety of positions with the European political arena, including representation at European Youth Minister’s Conferences and within local/national government offices. In recent years he volunteered in an AIDS foundation. Paolo has completed the Certificate in Intercultural Studies at CIC and considers himself to be constantly learning from studying the experiences of others as well as his own.
